Nevada Goes to Biden

It took a little longer than I thought it would, but Nevada has now been called for Biden. That puts his vote total, so far, at 290. Georgia is trending in his direction and will hopefully be called before the end of the weekend. I think North Carolina is out of reach, but we’ll see what the remaining votes there look like.

Joe Biden Elected President

And Kamala Harris will be the first woman elected vice-president.

NBC News has just projected the state of Pennsylvania for Joe Biden. Those 20 votes put him over the 270 needed for victory, and that is that. The republic has been given a reprieve. You have no idea how deeply proud I am that our country has decided on this course change. Donald Trump will be a failed, one-term president. But, more than that, he will be replaced by a man ready to lead us out of the morass, a man perfectly fit for the moment, the perfect elixir to these last four years.

And I can’t tell you how happy and proud I am that a woman will be vice-president. Kamala Harris finally breaks that glass ceiling that Hillary Clinton cracked so long ago. My mom was in tears just now. That she and my sisters and my nieces and my mother-in-law can witness this in their lifetimes is nothing short of tremendous.

More later, but for now, my husband and I are about to open the Veuve Clicquot that has been chilling all week!

If it weren’t for this quarantine, I’d be heading out to celebrate. But the Veuve will be sufficient for now, especially with the knowledge that the Trump years will soon be over.

Election Night, Day 4

National Popular Vote Update, 9:00am, PT, 06 November:

Biden/Harris: 73,810,371 (50.5%)

Trump/Pence: 69,687,498 (47.6%)

The Democratic ticket has taken leads in Georgia and Pennsylvania. Either one of those states, or Nevada, would put Biden and Harris over the top.

Zelda is Home

She is home and feeling better.

Small meals of bland chicken and rice along with a couple of medications for the next few days.

The vet’s best guess is that Zelda ate a spider or another bug of some sort, which would explain the combination of face/eye/jowl swelling along with the really upset tummy.

But she should be fine, and we are happy to have her back home! 🙂

The Ultimate Disappointment

Exit polls show that Donald Trump’s share of the LGBTQ vote doubled from 14% in 2016 to 28% this year.

There are a lot of facts and figures that I will never understand about this year’s election results, but this particular data point is the most confounding.

I just can’t wrap my head around this.

Trump’s War On American Democracy

The headline to this essay over at Talking Points Memo should scare every American to their very core.

While the likelihood of a Biden victory in the presidential race remains high, the fact that over 70 million Americans (and counting!) cast their ballots for Donald Trump, a dangerous authoritarian, should be deeply disturbing to everyone.

Don’t tell me you love your country, don’t tell me you’re a “patriot,” and then turn around and vote for the most unpatriotic American to ever run for public office, a man who so obviously hates his country and its citizens.

Little Miss Zelda and the Really Crappy Week

Our French Bulldog, Zelda, has had a rough week. Late Tuesday night she had an allergic reaction to something (we still aren’t sure what), causing redness and swelling in her face as well as around her eyes and jowls. We gave her a Benadryl and took her to the pet ER where they examined her and gave her a steroid. Both medications did the trick and reduced the swelling, and further examination by the vet showed nothing of note. We took her home, only to have the swelling come back yesterday afternoon, accompanied by some vomiting.

Another trip to the vet, another round of Benadryl, and she was sent home when the swelling went down again.

Well, this morning at around 1am, she woke up and was very agitated. She just could not get comfortable, wouldn’t settle down, didn’t quite know what to do with herself. I thought maybe she was hungry (her dinner last night was small because of her earlier vomiting episode), so I gave her a very light meal, which she gobbled up. Yet she remained restless for another hour or so. After a quick phone consultation with the vet ER, I gave her another Benadryl to see if that would help her sleep. It did, but only for an hour or so.

Around 5am I tried to feed her again but this time she rejected her food. I tried one of her favorite treats and she rejected that, too. When any dog poo-poos food, it’s generally not a good sign.

And so we made another trip to the ER this morning. This time they have decided to keep her for the day and overnight. They ran some labs and we are told that everything looks relatively normal. Her liver enzymes are slightly high, but that is to be expected with what is going on. X-rays are normal. They are going to keep her overnight for aggressive treatment – IV fluids, drugs, constant observation, and if she continues to improve, we can pick her up in the morning.

Fingers crossed our girl snaps out of whatever this is.

Update, 4:15pm, PT: Zelda ate some chicken baby food and seems to be feeling a bit better. They are giving her an oral medication to help keep her tummy settled. She’s a bit more active but not quite 100% back to her puppy self. The vet says she is heading in the right direction and should be good to come home in the morning if things continue on this trajectory.

Update #2, 7:00am, PT, 06 November: The vet says she’s “doing really great.” She went for a walk, has a bit more energy, and is anxious to hangout with humans. At the moment she is resting comfortably. I will pick her up in about an hour! Yaaayyy!!!
